The 12 Infantry Division Sassari was a Infantry Division of the Italian Army during World War II. The Sassari Division was formed in 1937, mobilized for war in June 1940, it was based on the Italian – Yugoslavian border and after the invasion of Yugoslavia was later used on anti partisan operations in Croatia being based in Split from February 1942, as part of the Italian XVIII Corps, it was also involved in the Battle of the Neretva. In January 1943, it was recalled to Italy and sent to Rome as part of the citys defence. It was disbanded after the Italian surrender to the Allies in September 1943.[1] In 1988 the Sassari Mechanized Brigade was formed, Sassari Brigade continues the tradition of Sassari Division.

  1. ^ An Italian Infantry Division normally consisted of two Infantry Regiments (three Battalions each), a Artillery Regiment, a Mortar Battalion (two companies), a Anti Tank Company, a Blackshirt Legion of two Battalions was sometimes attached. Each Division had only about 7,000 men, The Infantry and Artillery Regiments contained 1,650 men, the Blackshirt Legion 1,200, each company 150 men. [2]
